Oz Team Supporter Gear

Does anyone remember OzVolley and AVF announcing around the time of the Canada series that supporter gear (Jerseys and Team Shirts) would be available for online purchase after the conclusion of the series?

I was looking forward to getting a #3 Nathan Roberts or a #6 Aden Tutton top. Supporter gear is a great idea. As a Gen Y, I’m part of probably the most hedonistic generation that’s lived, and this is exactly the sort of stuff marketers can sell to me quite easily.

Well obviously it didn’t happen and from what I’ve heard it ain’t gonna happen either.

Pity, it would have been cool to sit in a crowd of people wearing supporter gear cheering on the Green and Gold in a sport i actually like. Thoughts anyone?

About Hugh Nguyen

I'm a producer at The People's Republic of Animation, an animation studio I co-founded with my two best friends. I was born in Paris in 1982. My parents are Vietnamese and were studying in Paris during the war and met, fell in love, got married and had me and my sister. We moved to Australia when i was about 6 months old and have lived here ever since. I have liked cartoons for as long as i can remember, and got interested in making animation when by two best friends and I got together and started experimenting with a super 8 camera in high school. Over the years our collaboration evolved into what is now The People's Republic of Animation. For me, it's the promise of producing great work with terrific people and the endless opportunities that make life worth living.

  1. I’m sure that, given enough voices, AVF will start to get on board. It is this type of gear that starts to pay for the AVF and make it financial, but only if it is marketed correctly. The AVF is still in a tight spot when it comes to finances and probably can’t afford the outlay at this moment. The other aspect could be that AVF is trying to focus on the sport and not on the marketing. Who knows? The only thing I know is that if the AVF want the sport to grow in Australia then they need to get some of these drawcard games out to the “lesser” cities and towns. Take a leaf out of AFL’s book.

    • I take that back a little. I should have read the lead in better. Maybe someone like AVW or Eldo can get a hold of them and flog the remainder off? Comments still stands re the “lesser” cities and towns though.

      • I’m pretty sure there should be plenty leftover. At least from what i saw when they were packing up at Dandenong.

      • incidentally, Australia is geographically inconvenient as a location for friendly matches.

You’re right Ian, if they could do something it’d be great. USA Volleyball actually send out these CD Roms with info on volleyball, easy cheap ways to start a volleyball programme, and video of what higher level volleyball looks like. they organise tickets to see college matches and stuff like that. It’s a good way to get the message out on a sparsely populated continent.

  2. The shortage of these items could have something to do with the fact that as of just recently the AVF has a new supplier of Australian Uniforms…..Errea.
The supporter and uniform tops that were on sale where not of the new brand, and I am quite sure that “Errea” would be very happy to make them available.

  3. Hugh,

You live in Adelaide mate. When was the last time you saw a Australian team play volleyball in Adelaide?
The last time I saw one was 12 years ago (world league) At that time the crowd was and still could have been the biggest volleyball crowd at an international volleyball event.
12 years ago the supporter gear was a green and gold caftan and flared trousers. Don’t get too enthusiastic because if you have to wait another 12 years we could all be dressed in silver with helmets.

    • Well, the world league game in 98 in Adelaide was on the night of my formal. One of my best friends at the time (who was polish and fellow tragic) chose to go to the game. in retrospect, i wish i had too.

But i do remember a Friendly between the AIS women and Kenya at Seymour College in 1999(?). Renee Maycock, the Averys and Fleur Holmes all played.

  4. Hey Leb do you remember what year it was when the Brazil junior team came out. I think I remember as SASI we played a warm up game before they played the national team at the powerhouse??? Then went on to play them at the superdrome and managed to win a set off them. The only other memories are of one of their players bouncing balls into the powerhouse scoreboard above the court in the warm up, and a skinny kid doing the business as an outside hitter…Giba.

    • i remember (nearly) everything, Schachty :)
I remember the warmup game, but not that it was before the Brazil game. I remember the superdrome game quite well. The player bouncing balls was Axe, who has been bouncing around Europe for a long time. I think he was even still playing last year.
Giba was in the team and was suspended for a match earlier in the tour for ‘breaking team rules’.
I don’t remember exactly, but that team also had some other players from the same age group. Also in that age group are Gustavo and Ricardo. I don’t remember them, but they may have been there.
